Day 64: Sickle-Cell Warriors
Today’s post is dedicated to children battling hematologic disorders, including sickle-cell anemia. Children with special health care needs sometimes require specialized support in school. This type of support can come in the form of an implemented Individualized Education Program or a Section 504 Accommodations Plan.
The types of supports potentially available range in intensity and frequency, and may include one or more of the following:
- instruction during periods of hospitalization;
- home instruction during recovery periods;
- private school for medically fragile students;
- school nurse or school health services, such a 1:1 nurse on the school bus and throughout the school day;
- designated health paraprofessional;
- remedial tutoring to make up for missed instruction time;
- extended school year services;
- parent counseling and training;
- physical therapy;
- psychological and/or social work services, including counseling;
- modified locker and classroom placement to avoid stairs or crowded hallways;
- flexible class schedules to accommodate the child’s tolerance for a full school day and medical appointments;
- accessible school building with elevators and ramps; and
- medical services for diagnostic or evaluation purposes.
